5 Atom Mini-ITX Boards Reviewed
Introduction
Intel launched their low cost x86 Atom processor in April this year, and in under 6 months it has exceeded all expectations.
The 4W TDP of the Atom made it ideal for use not only in miniature laptop computers and handheld devices but also in Mini-ITX boards. Zippy processors drawing just a few Watts had been thin on the ground up to this point, with VIA's C3 and C7 processors doing good business for several years as a result.
The 5 boards reviewed here represent both the first and second wave of Atom based Mini-ITX boards. Intel came first with their board. Gigabyte and Jetway chose to make a better version of Intel's board. MSI have designed a completely new fanless industrial Atom board and added a bunch of ports. Finally, Intel have released their first Dual Core Atom board, just 4 months after the first.
